Today on the 9th of October three Kilkenny and Carrickshock hurlers came to our school.The three hurlers who came were John Tennyson, Michael Rice and John Dalton.They came at 12 o clock. When they came in everyone gave them a cheer. John Tennyson brought the cup in. We asked them questions and they signed autographs. John Tennyson and John Dalton are ex pupils of this school. John Tennyson and John Dalton remembered playing in the school league and dreaming of once playing in an All Ireland final. John Tennyson gave us free homework on Monday night. We had a great time with them and hope to see them again next year.

Action from today's game

Today we  started the school hurling league. The two teams playing  were Josh’s team and Edwin’s team. It was a real good game. At half time the score was level 1 goal each. In the end Josh’s team beat Edwin’s team 1-0 to 2-2. After the match Josh said “I thought Edwin was going to pull away at half time”. We are really looking foward to the rest of the games. Hi Kieran here!
We all had a great September here at Newmarket. Kilkenny recently won 4 consecutive All-Ireland titles on the 6/9/09. They were against Tippererary. It was a very good game. The score was Kilkenny 2-22 Tippererary 0-23. The Iverk show was postponed to the Saturday this year. It was really good. There were  lots of stalls. A good few from our school won prizes. I came first in the creative writing and Anne Marie won two prizes,  and our past pupil Conor Aylward came 3rd in the poetry competition. On the 22nd the National Ploughing Championship was held in Athy, County Kildare. It was opened by Ireland’s president Mary McAleese. It will be held in Athy next year in the same farm. The weather was great all through the month of September. We are all enjoying the Indian summer. Our swimming lessons begin tommorow in The Watershed. We are all looking forward to going there.

6th class 2009

Hi Conor A here

I’m getting a week off school because I’m going on holidays so I’m writing about primary school. There’s loads of stuff that I’ll remember about school. Like when Conor D chased a fly around the room or when I broke my nose and in Junior Infants I stuck a crayon up my nose and had to go to the doctor. The doctor wanted to know if I wanted it back. I’ll miss Newmarket (and I’ll miss the 6th class cycle) when I move into Kieran’s in Kilkenny. There’s been loads of funny things during the years. I’ve got into trouble a lot as well. I’ll remember the time when I fell off the chair and when I had my own phrase “Dinnéar mór blasta.” I’ll miss Newmarket and I’ll hate secondary school, probably.

Hi Darren and Conor here. Yestarday we played our last school’s hurling match of the year. We were against Kilmacow and we won. At half time it was Kilmacow 3-1 , Carrickshock 1-2.  Although we were 5 points down we fought hard for every ball. Our captain was Darragh Brennan who inspired us to a great victory. Conor Duggan played an outsanding game and scored 4 good points and tried his hardest. Conor Alyward played an excellent game in the backs running for every ball. Darren had a brilliant game,  did some great flicks and scored the first goal of the game. Afterwards we gave our trainer Joe Brennan and manager Tom Duggan a great round of applause. It was the last time Conor Duggan played in a Carrickshock jersey. Final score Carrickshock 4-5 Kilamacow 3-1.

Canoeing on the Dromore River

On the 2nd of April this year, the 5th and 6th class pupils went on a trip to Monaghan, to an activity centre called Tanagh. We went to meet up with  children from a school in Belfast.  Before the trip,  we were sending messages to them on the internet as part of  the Dissolving Boundaries project. When we were in Tanagh we did lots of activities like canoeing, archery, obstacle course and we went for a night walk in the woods! There was even a games room with a ping pong table and a small pool table. We were split into two groups, the first day, group number one did the watersports (canoeing and the slippery slope) the first day, and group number two did the activities on land (the obstacle course, rock climbing and archery). We stayed over night and the next day the groups swapped over and did the other activities! We all had great fun!

Newmarket 2009

Last week our school entered into a football competition. The competition was held in Thomastown. It was a competition for small schools in Killkenny. There were four groups involved in the competition. The teams were five a side, with three subs. The first match we played was against Monroe and we beat them 11-1!!. The last match we played was the final against Dunamaggin who beat us by 2-1 after a very tight game. Most of the games that we went through were very tough. The only match we lost was the final. The whole competition was good fun. We also got free homework and about a half a day off.

Yesterday there was an unusual visitor to the school. A little fox cub!Her name is Minnie. She is about 3 weeks old and looks like a black kitten. She drinks milk from a baby bottle ( she won’t drink the milk unlesss it is heated ) and will sometimes eat some puppy food. She is not allowed cows milk so she is given SMA baby milk. She stays in a house with 2 terriers and in the wild the dogs would have killed her. My grandmother is rearing her as a pet and hopefully we can keep her if she doesn’t get vicious. She was an orphan and would have died unless she was found ( her mother was killed by hunters ). Minnie will turn orange as she gets older. She has little wisps of orange fur on her face.

Today at lunchtime we had our last semi-final of our school league. Josh’s team played against Conor Aylward’s team. Josh was the favourite to win because he beat Conor’s team at the start of the league. Conor’s team had an early lead as I scored the opening goal. By half time the score was 2-2 to 0-2. The second half was more difficult as the teams were more eager to win. After 10 minutes into the second half Jody slid on the wet grass and he slid into the curb. Despite his injury he carried on in the match. Just before the match was over Luke McNamara scored the clinching goal when he pulled first time. The final score was 5-4 to 3-2. Conor Alyward and Darragh Brennan will be fighting for the title on Monday the 23-3-09.

Today in blazing sun we had an exciting semi-final in the Newmarket school hurling league. Conor D’s team and Darragh’s team were playing for a place in the final. It was a very tight game and any score made a difference. It went down to the very last puck of the ball. Darragh’s team won by two points in the end after a lot of good hurling. The final score was 3-2 to 0-9. Let’s hope tomorrow’s semi-final is just as good.
