This year we competed in the Schools Ladies Football League. Our team was called Carrickshock and the three schools in our parish; Newmarket, Monroe and Stoneyford came together to make the team. Our first match was against Owning/Templeorum, second:Urlingford, third:Skeoughvasteen, fourth: Ballyhale and finally, fifth: Rower/Inistioge. We won every match comfortably. We went straight to the semi’s. We played Urlingford, and again, won comfortably. It was straight to the final in Piltown against Owning/Templeorum.
It was final day, and we were really nervous! We started the match well, getting the first point. We got a goal about five or ten minutes in. It was a very tough match and it was even-stevens until a few minutes to half time when we pulled away… but only by a few points. We were told by our coach: Mr.Duggan that Owning/Templeorum would come back fighting. So we were expecting them to close the gap. But we weren’t expecting them to come fighting back so vigorously. They kept closing the gap, little by little. Until, the two teams were level. They pulled two points ahead. But Leanne (our captain) managed another point in the closing minutes. The full time score was 2-6 to 2-5 to Owning/Templeorum. We were heartbroken! But that’s not to say we didn’t have any scoring chances, we had plenty, but failed to finish them off.
Overall, the league was great fun and was well worth doing, apart from losing the Roinn C County Final, of course! Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorách!
