Active School Walkway

Fifth and Sixth Class were very busy planning the Active School Walkway and we got the plan complete on Thursday 12th March. We created a map of our school grounds and clearly indicated the location of the 14 Walkway control points. As the four blue control points should indicate an activity, we incorporated activities that were already painted on our school playground. Hence marker 4 indicates running or hopping around the snail and marker 5 indicates bunny-hopping along the snake. We will make up activities to complete at marker 9 and at marker 14, and change them regularly to keep the walkway interesting. We then got a trundle wheel and measured the route. We have left our map, the photos and our control point signs at school so that the caretaker can erect them. Then we will measure the route again. We have posted the Active Walkway plan our the school Active School Flag noticeboard. Thanks to all the senior students who worked diligently on this project.

Basketball League

On 30th January 2020, the Active School Flag Committee had a meeting and we discussed organising a school basketball league. We decided to have the league for pupils from second class to sixth class inclusive. When it would be complete, we would then organise playground games for the Jnr Room again. A sign-in sheet was distributed. We then arranged the players into five teams. The five team-captains were from sixth class namely Daniel B, Matthew, Conor, Adam and Oisín. Each team got to play four games before the knockouts. The games were played at lunchtime. The playground leaders who were not in the league helped out by recording the score, keeping the time and fetching the balls that went out of bounds. Each day after the game the Captains would motivate their teams and remind them when their next game was on. While there was fierce competition in the semi-final and final stages, Adam’s team came out on top. All teams should be congratulated for their commitment and how they always included their younger members. You were all wonderful!

They are Matthew, Conor, Adam and Oisín all from sixth class, and Daniel R, Ellie John and Dessie from 5th Class. Well done to all the players who took part.

Our Active School Flag Slogan is Jump, Run, Dance, Play; Get Active Every Day!  All students from Junior Infants to Sixth Class showed their dance moves today. A big thanks to the playground leaders Mary Kate and Donnacha Sh for playing the music. The senior pupils joined in and made it fun for the younger ones in the true spirit of Christmas.  Our playlist included Santa Got Run Over By a Reindeer, All I Want for Christmas, Rocking Around The Christmas Tree, Merry Christmas Everyone. The standout track was Christmas Robot Beep beep boop boop………

All the classes in St Brendan’s  N.S. completed the Active Break Every Day challenge from 11th November to December 6th 2019. Mrs Walsh’s classes in the Junior Room are at Level 5 on Go Noodle. Mrs Dunphy’s classes in the Middle Room completed all their activities on their Christmas Advent Calendar, in addition to completing four weeks of Active Breaks. Ms Carroll’s classes in the Snr Room kept the initiative going for five weeks as it was so popular with the pupils.

Well done to our 5th Class students who have been very busy this week in the yard. We had balance bikes for two breaks and dance shed on Friday, and we had lots of volunteers to help those on the rota, especially as each infant needed help getting those helmets on. As the infants are speeding around at this stage, the fifth class introduced the traffic light game.

The December Rota for Playground Leaders is up in the Snr Classroom. This week we were very busy as the playground leaders were helping the Jnr & Snr Children use the balance bikes at break time. They went out for three days Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as we want to use the balance bikes as much as possible before returning them. We also had Festive Friday in the Dance Shed as children wore Christmas hats and festive hairbands.

We designed Advent Active Calendars for the month of December. Fifth and Sixth class worked in groups and made three calendars i.e. a calendar for the Jnr Room, Middle room and Snr Room. The fourth group made an active calendar for the playground leaders.

The Dance Shed is great fun and is such an inclusive place to be. Pupils from all classes from Jnr Infants to Sixth Class come together to hang out with their friends, dance and enjoy the music. Thanks to Mary Kate and Tessa who were leaders this week and to Jessica for providing the playlist.

Dessie and Ellie played sly fox with the Jnr Room and it was a hit. Donnacha and Keelin were in the Dance Shed rolling out the hits. The dance hit for November is Dance Monkey. We also had  Panini (Lil Nas X) and Boyfriend (for Ariana Grande fans). Kate and Daniel introduced the Jnr Room to Smelly Sock. After a slow start, (you can get dizzy swinging that rope), they got quite a crowd and boy can they jump! Well done to all the leaders for lending your enthusiasm and fun.

5th and 6th Class pupils are our playground leaders. We have zoned the yard into two areas. On Mondays at Little Break (11.00 -11.15), the Jnr Room children (Jnr & Snr Infants and 1st Class) will meet their leaders for games. On Wednesdays (11.00-11.15) the middle room children (2nd, 3rd and 4th Class) will meet their leaders for games. On Fridays, the Dance Shed will take place from 11.00 to 11.15, and is open to all. Well done to our leaders Conor & John who played Shipwreck with the Jnrs on Monday 11th Nov. Oisín and Daniel B kept the middle room moving with line chase and jail on Wednesday.
